weeks, the official start of the crew season will be upon us. I
am writing to update you on some administrative
and organizational matte
rs that will be important over the next few weeks.

Personnel/coaching
First, I would like to take this opportunity to
introduce
and welcome Sara McGanity to the Sidwell Crew team. Sara will
be joining the coaching staff this
season to support me and Ted with dai
ly practices, weekend races and various
organizational matters. Please j
oin me
in extending a warm welcome to Sara. You
will all have the oppo
rtunity to meet her face-to-face over the coming weeks.

Pre-season tr
aining
With only a few weeks before we enter the competitive
season, it
is critical that we begin focusing on our fitness and training
regimens.
I trust that each one of you
has been utilizing the training journals t
hat were distributed in November. The coaches are looking forward to seein
g the
progress that you have made over the last several weeks.

To h
elp you get in shape for the season, the coaches will
offer a pre-season
training program beginning Wednesday, January 20. The objective of the pre
-season training is
to help you attain a proper fitness level before the
season starts and to teach
some rowing basics to the novice group. Remem
ber that we will be conducting team selection fitness test on the
first w
eek of the spring season (February 26-27).

The first pre-season sessi
on will be held next Wednesday, January 20 from 6:30-7:30am. We will meet
outside of Ms. Zug’s
office. Regular sessions will then take
p
lace as follows:
· Monday and Wednesday mornings, 6:30-7:30a
m

It is expected that all
rowers who are not on a winter sports tea
m will commit to these two pre-season
training sessions each week. We ha
ve
intentionally scheduled the training sessions in the mornings so that
you will
not have to sacrifice any academic and/or extracurricular activi
ties after
school.

Please note that if you do not attend the pre-
season
training, you will have points automatically deducted from your te
am selection
fitness test in February. The coaches
will be taking atte
ndance at each of the pre-season sessions. Note
that winter sports athle
tes are not expected to commit to pre-season training
for crew but are we
lcome to participate if they have the time.

Organizational meeting

The parent-rower
organizational meeting will be held in the US dining
room on February 22 at
6:30pm. It is critical that all
rowers and at l
east one of their parents attend this meeting. It will offer a prelude to
the season ahead
and provide you with all of the administrative, logistic
al and organizational
information that you will need in the spring. Plea
se put this meeting on your calendars now.

Spring break schedule
A
s a reminder, varsity rowers are expected to return from
spring break by
Wednesday, March 24. The team will practice that afternoon at 4:00pm and w
ill then have
double practices (roughly 7am and 4pm) on Thursday and Frid
ay, March 25-26. The varsity boats will participate in a
tri-meet agains
t Ireton and O’Connell on Saturday, March 27 on the Anacostia.

Novice rowers are
exempt from the spring break schedule and will not p
ractice from Friday,
March 19-Monday, March 29. Any varsity rower who wi
ll be absent from
spring break practices must inform me, in writing, as s
oon as possible.
